Chocolate factory in Berlin. Conclusion [61] The temporal variability of the modeled climatic mass balances of Vestfonna is in line with findings obtained [62] The climatic mass balance of Vestfonna was calculated for Austfonna or the Ny‐Ålesund region [Hagen et al., for the 9 year period from September 2000 to August 2009 2003; Rasmussen and Kohler, 2007; Schuler et al., 2007].

A spatial comparison of snow water equivalents above the previous end‐of‐summer surface serves for obtaining insights into the spatial distribution of snow accumulation across Vestfonna. Altitude was found to be the only significant spatial parameter for controlling snow accumulation across the ice cap. However, for the ice cap Vestfonna, in northeastern Svalbard, climatic mass balance modelling has suggested almost balanced conditions over a period of nine years (2000–2009). A slightly positive geodetic mass balance (1990–2005) has been reported from a comparison of laser altimetry to older DEMs.

Two aseismic ridges, the Laccadives-Maldives-Chagos Ridge (LMCR) formed after the Deccan volcanism in western India and the Ninetyeast Ridge (NER) formed after the emplacement of the Rajmahal Vestfonna ice cap, northeastern Svalbard, is one of the largest ice bodies in the European Arctic, but little is known about the evolution of its mass balance. Introduction: The Radar Imager for Mars' subsur- Vestfonna has a relatively small area of thick slow moving interior ice. It is instead dominated by fast flowing outlet glaciers that extend from the coast to regions close to the ice divide. All of the fast outlet glaciers on Vestfonna are thought to be topographically controlled (Pohjola et al., 2011) and the rover.
A consistent pattern of almost steady retreat of the southern and north‐eastern outlet glaciers of the ice cap is observed while Franklinbreen, the only major outlet glacier draining towards the north‐west shows re‐advance. In this study we compile and present snow cover information obtained from 22 snow pits that were dug on Vestfonna during this period. Locations are along two transects on the northwestern, land terminating slope of the ice cap, on its central summit, Ahlmann Summit, and at a set of several other locations in the eastern and northern part of the ice cap. distribution of the snow thickness on Vestfonna Ice Cap in spring 2009 is validated using ground penetrating radio-echo soundings and sporadic snow pit data. The accumulation patterns show small-scale luv/lee patterns which are in good agreement with both the spatial structure of the radio-echo soundings and the in-situ snow pit measurements. [1] The ice cap Vestfonna in the northern Svalbard archipelago is one of the largest ice bodies of the European Arctic (∼2400 km 2), but little is known about its mass balance.
